![]() Imagery from Dr Shaia's New Release, "Praying Anew: 72 Hours of Easter for All Creation" International Spiritual Director, Writer and Retreat Leader, Dr Alexander Shaia will be in Wellington very shortly to participate in the Eastern Suburbs Week of Guided Prayer which will begin and end with services in St George's Anglican Church, Seatoun. In addition to praying and guiding participants during the Week of Prayer, Alexander will participate in and speak at the following gatherings which are open to the public:
"Praying Anew: 72 Hours (of Easter) for All Creation is a fresh expression of Easter, its spirituality and celebration. The prose and poetry speak of today and tomorrow but the strokes are brushed with antiquity, textured with the sensual earth, move to the rhythm of star and cosmos and infused with our dream to be one. The core structure comes from 3rd to 5th century Christian tradition, yet the prayer of that era does not serve as an exacting blueprint but rather invitation to explore contemporary need and mystery. What may be the only true innovation in this Easter are prayers set in unitive thought. These texts are an effort to lessen the last few centuries’ dualistic expression of self, cosmos and God. It is also hoped that the prayer style here might inspire poets and composers to craft chant and prayer anew in the language of diverse union ..." During the latter part of 2012, Dr Shaia was a pilgrim on the Camino Pilgrimage trail in Spain.

I found the week of guided prayer very meaningful. I found it helpful having the time with (name given) who gently guided my thinking. It was good to have a focused week where I had decided to set aside the time for reflection with God, and having the time each day with (a prayer guide) helped me to sort through the things that came up in my times of quiet. I also appreciated the devotional services at the beginning and end of the week. They were lovely times of quiet and reflection and very peace giving. It was a very enriching week. It was wonderfully refreshing week: people have commented on how they feel they have grown closer to God during the week. May God continue to richly bless your ministry. In Christian circles we talk about the value of a ministry of encouragement. We want to thank these two ministers of encouragement for taking the time to 'do it.' Sr Clare O'Connor and Graham Millar have been prayer guides for a group of seven retreatants who have met on the Victoria University campus. This Week continues a trend of staging a week of guided prayer annually at Vic. in recent years. While the numbers participating may have been down a little this year, the retreatants have responded very positively to the opportunity to take time out like this to reflect and pray in a more intentional way. Last night, a group of fifteen retreatants who have been meeting in St Hilda's Anglican Church, Island Bay gathered for a closing group session. This group with prayer guides - Adrienne Thompson, Jo Anastasiadis and Terry Alve - have similarly enjoyed the opportunity to 'retreat' in the midst of their daily life and work. The weekday individual sessions have been held in the afternoons and evenings following an opening group session in the church on Sunday at 4pm. This has been a first Week of Guided Prayer for the Island Bay community. The ecumenical nature of this community was reflected in the retreatants coming from various of the local churches. We thank Spiritual Growth Ministries and the Wallis Trust for their sponsorship of these Weeks of Prayer. The next Week of Guided Prayer in the Wellington region will begin on Sunday June 10 in St Paul's, Waiwhetu. You can enrol online to attend this week HERE.
