Assisi Gardens, Te Kopi Rd., Gladstone, Wairarapa Well, 'What do you know?" New Zealand, Wairarapa to be more specific has its own Assisi. Assisi Gardens above Te Kopi Rd., Gladstone have been developed from scratch by Andrew & Cec Buchanan over the past 15 years. This magnificent, secluded, rural, retreat has been lovingly planted, landscaped, developed and maintained so well that it has become a garden of national significance - see NZ Gardens Trust.
I wandered in unplanned early August 2015 while filling in time whilst in the Wairarapa. The drive in takes one to 225m ASL. At this height there is a definite micro climate for this garden tucked away in the Gladstone hills. The garden is open and accessible to the public daily, year round. There is access for buses and the venue is used for weddings and other functions. Large Marquees can be erected on a flat area adjacent the lower olive groves. The Lookout offers a wonderful panoramic view towards the residence and the southern Wairarapa. The walkway through the gardens (see diagram) took me around 40 mins. with a few stops. This definitely is walking to be savoured and approached meditatively. I came away thinking what a wonderful place for Retreat - perhaps a day retreat, but perhaps arrangements could be made with the owners for something more substantial in the nature of Retreat! This place is full of serendipity. Friday Evening June 27, 7.30pm at the Conference Room, St Andrew's on the Terrace The Fourfold Journey of All in Christ Our early Christian ancestors assumed a Jewish metaphor for the journey that each of us makes with God and Spirit. They understood the journey as on-going, cyclical and sequential, moving across four paths like the wheel of nature across the seasons. Their knowledge of the journey's four paths was the source of our great Christian spiritual practices. And among their most inspired action was the choice of the four gospels as The Fourfold Way (practices) of Jesus. In this lens, we will see the gospel of Matthew as the text of how we face change; Mark as how we move through suffering; John as how we receive joy and know union; and Luke as how we mature in service. To tend the sacred fire of love in action, we absolutely require a map. Yet having the map is but the first step. Then we must walk. All are invited to explore this ancient fourfold map and its practice. Welcome! Centering Prayer is a form of Meditation in the Christian contemplative tradition that guides the heart, mind and soul to deepen towards the Sacred. Through silence and an inner gesture of letting go, we learn to experience God beyond words, emotions and thoughts, and to release our attachment to our ‘false self’ as Merton named it. The practice cultivates a deepening relationship with Life, and opens us to “purity of heart” and compassion. This workshop is based on the teachings of Fr Thomas Keating and Rev Cynthia Bourgeault. Facilitator: Molly King & Pip Nicholls Venue: St Andrew’s Church, Reikorangi Valley, Waikanae (Wheelchair Access) Time: Saturday 10:30am to 3.30pm. Cost: $50. Facilitator: Pip Nicholls Venue: Pa Maria, 78 Hobson Street, Thorndon, Wellington (wheelchair accessible) Time: Thursday Nov 7, 10am to 4pm Cost: $50 BYO lunch Enquiries/registration by 1 Nov. to: Pip Nicholls (04) 562 6364 or pip.nicholls@xtra.co.nz Nov 21 THIRST, TAMBOURINES AND TESSA WITH THE CARMELITES - RETREAT DAY If we ever thought the life of a monastic was more the ‘Mary’ role, well Teresa of Avila would prove that it’s frequently the role of ‘Martha.’ For Teresa, it’s not what we do but how we do it that counts. Today we’ll explore the ‘dance’ of the Carmelites through the eyes of Tessa Bielecki and what ‘embodied prayer’ may have to say to us today.
